When the children leave home we call the parents "empty nesters". When the workloads leave the in-house Data Centre for IaaS or co-location can we call IT Operations Managers "empty rackers"?
Turning the kids room into a sewing room is relatively easily. But downsizing the physical server space within an enterprise can be a very confounding project. Modular Data Centre design had focused on the scale up of capacity to eliminate periods of funded over-capacity. But now modular design must enable the scale-down as workloads leave to ensure power & cooling isn't over provisioned for the physical requirements of the remaining workloads.
